Lake Champlain

from $54

Lake Champlain is a large natural freshwater lake lying mostly between New York and Vermont and reaching north into Quebec. It runs 107 miles long, covers about 514 square miles, and sits in the Champlain Valley between the Adirondack Mountains and the Green Mountains, with much of its New York shoreline inside the Adirondack Park. The lake is named for the French explorer Samuel de Champlain, who reached it in 1609, and its Abenaki name Pitawbagok means lake in between. Plattsburgh, New York, and Burlington, Vermont, are its largest settlements, and Fort Ticonderoga stands near its southern end.
