Western New York is the far end of the state: Buffalo, its towns, the Niagara River heading for the falls, and Lake Erie at the door.
Western New York is the westernmost region of the state, and by nearly every definition it takes in Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Jamestown and their suburbs, the Niagara Frontier and the western Southern Tier. Buffalo is the big city, on the eastern shore of Lake Erie at the head of the Niagara River, right on the Canadian line: 278,349 people at the 2020 census, a metropolitan area of more than 1.16 million, and the oldest urban parks system in the country. The Seneca name for the place, Došowëh, means between the basswoods. Inside the city the store carries Allentown, Elmwood Village, North Buffalo, Parkside and South Buffalo.
Kenmore is a village of about 1.4 square miles inside the town of Tonawanda, tight against the Buffalo line, so: Ken-Ton. Tonawanda itself runs from the Niagara River to Tonawanda Creek, which is part of the Erie Canal. Grand Island is the largest island in the river, bridged at both ends. Amherst, 129,595 people, is the biggest of the towns, and Williamsville sits mostly inside it, where Ellicott Creek drops 27 feet at Glen Falls. Clarence was the first town in Erie County, in 1808; its Seneca name means Place of Hickory Bark. Lancaster, 14 miles east of downtown, has the county's oldest surviving stone structure, built in 1810.
West Seneca, one of the inner Southtowns, sits on what was the Buffalo Creek Reservation, and the creek that named the city runs west through it. Hamburg is on the Lake Erie shore and has held the Erie County Fair since 1868; by local account the hamburger was first served there in 1885. Orchard Park took that name in 1934 after eighty-four years as East Hamburgh, and Chestnut Ridge Park, the largest in Erie County, has a small waterfall that keeps a natural gas flame burning in a grotto. East Aurora has the Roycroft Campus, arts-and-crafts since around 1900. Springville, down on Route 39, was first called Fiddler's Green.
