Lake George

from $54

Lake George is a long, narrow lake at the southeast base of the Adirondack Mountains in Warren and Essex counties, New York, known as the Queen of the Lakes. It runs about 32.2 miles north to south, is one to three miles wide, and holds more than 170 islands; it drains north into Lake Champlain through the La Chute River at Ticonderoga. The Mohawk name for the lake is Kania:taro'kte, the Jesuit missionary Isaac Jogues called it Lac du Saint-Sacrement in 1646, and William Johnson renamed it for King George II in 1755, the year of the Battle of Lake George. The village of Lake George sits at the southern end, with Bolton Landing and Huletts Landing farther up the shore.
