Lake Placid is a glacial lake in the Adirondack Mountains of Essex County, New York, spread across the towns of North Elba and St. Armand on the northern side of the village that shares its name. It covers about 2,170 acres at an elevation of 1,857 feet, reaches roughly 151 feet at its deepest, and holds three islands named Buck, Moose and Hawk. The lake appeared on a map as early as 1804 as Placid Lake, and camps have lined its shores and islands since the late 19th century, many reachable only by boat. The village at its southern end, separated from the lake by Mirror Lake, hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980.
