Hemlock Lake

Hemlock Lake is a Finger Lake south of Rochester, lying mostly in Livingston County with a portion in Ontario County. Its name is a translation of the Seneca name O-neh-da Te-car-ne-o-di. The lake is seven miles long, about half a mile wide, 1,800 acres in area and up to 91 feet deep. Once lined with more than a hundred cottages and five hotels, it became a drinking-water source for the city of Rochester in 1876 and its shoreline was cleared beginning in 1895; today it is one of two Finger Lakes with virtually undeveloped shores, with boats limited to 17 feet and 10 horsepower and no swimming permitted.
