Council Rock is a neighborhood in the town of Brighton, Monroe County, New York, named for a fifty-ton boulder that stood beside an old Seneca trail at the corner of East Avenue and Council Rock Avenue, where by tradition the Seneca gathered for councils. Brighton fenced the rock in 1904, a state commission was created for it in 1905, and a bronze tablet was dedicated on it in 1919. The rock was shifted about twenty feet in 1931 for the widening of East Avenue and moved to the Stone-Tolan property in 1974, where an American elm was planted beside it in 1992. Council Rock is also the name of a K-2 primary school in the Brighton Central School District.
