South Clinton Avenue runs through Rochester's southeast quadrant and forms the southern edge of Swillburg, a 20-block triangular neighborhood of narrow streets and 19th-century homes that stretches along the avenue's east side from Meigs Street to the Brighton town line. The avenue is the neighborhood's main shopping street, lined with Indian, Chinese, Somali, Vietnamese and Japanese restaurants. Swillburg's Cinema Theatre opened in 1914 as The Clinton and took its Art Deco facade in 1949, and the 1930s Highland Diner stands across the street. A neighborhood coalition has added benches, planters, streetlights and painted traffic boxes along the avenue.
