Victor is the northwest corner of Ontario County, where the Thruway comes through, Eastview Mall sits off Exit 45 and Ganondagan holds the far older story.
Victor sits in the northwest corner of Ontario County, southeast of Rochester, with 15,969 people at the 2020 census. Its western and northern lines are the Monroe County border, up against Perinton and Mendon. The town was formed in 1812 from part of the Town of Bloomfield, and settlement by European Americans began around 1789. The name honors a hero of the War of 1812, and the village at the center of town carries the same name.
The older story is Ganondagan. An important Seneca village, also known as Gannagaro, stood within the town, and the site has been a state historic site since 1987; the Seneca Art & Culture Center opened on its grounds in 2015. Victor has also made ceramics since the 1890s, an insulator business that continues today as Victor Insulators. A cobblestone general store, a cobblestone railroad pumphouse and Valentown Hall are on the National Register of Historic Places.
The newer story is the Thruway, which crosses the northern part of town and meets Interstate 490 east of the hamlet of Fishers. Eastview Mall, 1,300,000 square feet of shopping, sits just off Thruway Exit 45 on Route 96 in the northwest part of town. The other hamlets go by names like East Victor, Motts Corners and Railroad Mills, and the village itself is 12 miles from the head of Canandaigua Lake.
