Lake Tear of the Clouds

from $54

Lake Tear of the Clouds is a small tarn on the southwest slope of Mount Marcy, New York's highest peak, in the town of Keene in Essex County. At 4,293 feet it is the highest pond in the state, and it is often cited as the highest source of the Hudson River, which it feeds through Feldspar Brook and the Opalescent River. Surveyor Verplanck Colvin gave the lake its name in an 1872 survey. On September 14, 1901, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt was here after climbing Mount Marcy when a messenger brought news that President McKinley was dying; his route down through the mountains is now the Roosevelt-Marcy Trail.
