Raquette Lake

from $54

Raquette Lake lies in the Adirondack Mountains in the towns of Long Lake and Arietta, Hamilton County, and is the source of the Raquette River. It covers 4,925 acres with a 99-mile shoreline of pines and mountains and reaches 95 feet deep. The name's origin is uncertain; one account traces it to snowshoes, raquettes in French, left on the shore by a party of Tories in 1776. In 1877 William West Durant began Camp Pine Knot here, the first of the Adirondack Great Camps, and two 19th-century summer chapels on the lake are still reachable only by water. The lake is part of the 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail.
