Saranac Lake names a chain of three connected lakes, Upper, Middle and Lower Saranac, on the Saranac River in Franklin County in the Adirondacks of northern New York, beside the village of the same name. Together they allow a 17-mile paddle with a single carry, and all three belong to the 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail. Upper Saranac is the largest at 5,250 acres, Lower Saranac has 50 islands and a state island campground with 87 sites, and Middle Saranac, also called Round Lake, is the smallest. The lakes were part of a 140-mile water route from Old Forge to Lake Champlain before the railroad arrived in 1892.
