Otisco Lake is the easternmost of the Finger Lakes, located in Onondaga County southwest of Syracuse and bordered by the towns of Marcellus, Otisco and Spafford. The lake is about 5.4 miles long and three-quarters of a mile across at its widest point, covering 2,048 acres with a maximum depth of 66 feet. Its name may come from the Iroquois name for its outlet, Nine Mile Creek, and an 1825 map spelled it Ostisco. A dam built at the outlet in 1869 enlarged the lake to serve as a reservoir for the Erie Canal, and since 1908 it has supplied public drinking water to part of Onondaga County.
