Skaneateles Lake is a Finger Lake in central New York whose shores lie in Onondaga, Cayuga and Cortland counties, with the village of Skaneateles at its northern end. The name means long lake in the Onondaga language. The lake is 16 miles long, about three-quarters of a mile wide and up to 315 feet deep, and it drains north through Skaneateles Creek to the Seneca River. Sitting at about 863 feet, higher than the other Finger Lakes, it is sometimes called The Roof Garden of the Lakes, and the city of Syracuse draws its water from the lake unfiltered. Sailing regattas have been held on the lake since 1847, and a mailboat still serves the cottages along its shore.
