Mendon
Mendon is a town in southeastern Monroe County on the county's southern border, with Mendon Center about 13 miles south of Rochester; its population was 9,095 at the 2020 census. The town is bordered by Pittsford to the north, Henrietta and Rush to the west, Lima and West Bloomfield to the south and Victor to the east, and is made up mostly of horse farms and family homes; the highest elevation in Monroe County, 1,028 feet, is just inside Mendon's southeast corner in the Hopper Hills. Mendon was established on May 26, 1812, when it separated from the town of Bloomfield, and became part of Monroe County when the county was created in 1821; according to a local historian it most likely takes its name from early settler Caleb Taft's hometown of Mendon, Massachusetts. Totiakton, a Seneca settlement of about 4,000 people, stood in present-day Mendon until it was destroyed in 1687 during the Marquis de Denonville's expedition against the Seneca.
