Rochester is the county seat of Monroe County, New York, a city of 211,328 people at the 2020 census at the center of a metropolitan area of about 1.05 million. It sits on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, split by the Genesee River, and grew up around the Erie Canal, earning the nicknames Flour City and later Flower City. The city maintains 42 public tennis courts among its recreation facilities, and indoor courts are available in the suburbs at clubs such as the Tennis Club of Rochester in Pittsford.
