Canandaigua is a city in Ontario County, New York, and the county seat, with a population of 10,576 at the 2020 census. Its name comes from the Seneca name for the village that once stood on the site, rendered in modern transcription as tganǫdæ:gwęh and meaning "the chosen spot" or "at the chosen town." The city sits at the northern end of Canandaigua Lake, a 15.5-mile-long Finger Lake that also supplies its drinking water, about 24 miles southeast of Rochester. Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park, Kershaw Beach and the 1794 Treaty of Canandaigua are part of its public record.
