Council Rock
Council Rock is a boulder in Brighton around which, according to tradition, the Seneca gathered for councils; when the first settlers arrived it stood under a great elm beside the old Indian trail leading from Canandaigua Lake to the site of Rochester, at what became 2351 East Avenue, the southeast corner of Council Rock Avenue and East Avenue, with the Orringh Stone tavern fifty yards to the northeast. In 1904 the Brighton Town Board authorized funds to enclose the rock with an iron fence and attach a plaque; a law creating the Seneca Indian Council Rock Commission of Brighton was signed by Governor Higgins on March 17, 1905, and a bronze tablet dedicated to the Nun-da-wa-o-no, the Senecas, Keepers of the Western Door, was attached to the rock on October 9, 1919 by the commission and the Rochester Historical Society. The rock, which weighs fifty tons and is seven feet tall and nine feet wide, was moved about twenty feet across Council Rock Avenue in 1931 when East Avenue was widened, and in 1974 the Allyn's Creek Garden Club financed moving it to the Stone-Tolan property ahead of another widening; an eighty-ton crane completed the move on December 6, 1974 after a forty-ton crane's cable snapped. In 1992 the Allyn's Creek Garden Club financed the planting of a disease-resistant American elm beside the Council Rock to replicate its original setting.
