East Ave

East Ave is a street in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. East Avenue is the name New York State Route 96 carries from the north edge of the village of Pittsford to its northern terminus at East Main Street in downtown Rochester; heading north it passes Nazareth College and St. John Fisher University, enters the town of Brighton alongside I-490, and meets Elmwood and Linden Avenues, Penfield Road and Clover Street. At the Brighton town-Rochester city line East Avenue passes through the center of the Can of Worms, the interchange linking I-490 and I-590, where I-590 passes under the avenue and I-490 flies over it; inside the city the last NY 96 reassurance sign is at North Winton Road. West of Winton Road, East Avenue runs through the East Avenue Historic District, a primarily residential area of historic upper-class houses including the George Eastman House; this stretch was narrowed from four lanes to two in mid-2010, and the avenue turns more commercial at Alexander Street before passing the Little Theatre and ending at a Y-junction with East Main Street. The East Avenue Historic District is a national historic district of about 362 acres along East Avenue from Probert Street to Alexander Street, containing roughly 700 structures including large 19th and early 20th century homes, houses of worship, meeting houses and museums; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
