In 1901 Buffalo lit an Electric Tower with more than two million bulbs and invited the hemisphere to come and look at it, the current coming down from Niagara. The city underneath was laid out by Joseph Ellicott around eight streets meeting at what is now Niagara Square, and was very nearly called New Amsterdam. Older than either name is Došowëh — 'between the basswoods' — the Seneca town on Buffalo Creek, and still the Seneca name for the place.
